Details

Tradition and sustainability come together to create this beautiful chair. First built for submarines in 1944, the Navy chair is famously built using a 77-step process that includes hand forming, welding, tempering, and finally, anodizing. No one else makes chairs this way. No one can. It takes a human eye to know when the process is done right, and it takes human hands to get it that way.

Care

To clean, use a soft cloth with soap and water or a household cleaning spray. Do not use stainless steel cleaners. For heavy cleaning or oil, use very hot water and a strong soap followed by light scrubbing in the direction of the grain with a soft-bristled brush. Car wax may be applied to polished finishes.

Often imitated. Never duplicated.

Make more with less.

Emeco was founded in 1944 to make chairs for the US Navy out of salvaged aluminum. Today, it’s chairs for you out of plastic, metal, and wood. By keeping that waste out of oceans and landfills, the brand continues to explore and innovate ways to protect our planet. From materials to methods, it’s a commitment to sustainability that also happens to produce beautiful design.

The Original Classic

Built by hand, the 1006 Navy chair has been made from pure recycled aluminum in Hanover, Pennsylvania since 1944. It's tested to last 150 years — in other words, well over a lifetime.

77 Steps to an Icon

Forming, welding, grinding, heat-treating, finishing, anodizing. These are just a few of the 77 steps it takes to build a 1006 Navy chair. Completely impractical? Yes. Unless you want a chair that lasts forever.

Owning the Impact

Emeco measures the footprint of its products from their creation to the moment they leave the factory. Knowing the carbon footprint of any product is the first step in reducing it, and Emeco tracks this data for every item they make. To Emeco, longevity — of design and manufacture — is one of the most important aspects of owning their impact. A timeless product that’s built to be handed down for generations — that's the standard we measure ourselves against.
